Voluntary Position
The Concrete Garden is an urban community food growing, play and wellbeing project providing growing space, activities, events and volunteering opportunities for the people of Possilpark and the wider North Glasgow area. It transforms underused and derelict spaces into vibrant community gardens and natural play areas, where people can grow food, learn, volunteer, socialise and play. Its work includes community food growing, gardening sessions, composting, cookery workshops, shared meals, outdoor play, seasonal events and volunteering opportunities. The charity also provides free play activities for children and young people, including gardening, outdoor cooking, arts and crafts, woodwork, sports, den building and nature-based activities.
Through these programmes, Concrete Garden supports physical and emotional wellbeing, builds confidence and skills, encourages community connections and promotes environmental awareness and sustainable living. Its inclusive approach means people of different ages and backgrounds can participate, contribute and learn together. Ultimately, Concrete Garden aims to help create a healthier, happier and more connected Possilpark, while giving local people a meaningful role in shaping and caring for their community.

They are now seeking a new Treasurer, who, in addition to fulfilling the duties of a Trustee/Board Member, will maintain an overview of the charity’s financial affairs. The Treasurer ensures that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are in place and maintained.
The Role of Treasurer:
As Treasurer, you will play a vital role on Concrete Garden’s Board, providing strategic financial oversight and helping to ensure the charity remains financially sustainable, resilient and well governed. Working closely with the Board and Senior Management Team, you will monitor financial performance, advise on budgets, reserves, financial risks and longer-term planning, and ensure appropriate financial controls, policies and procedures are in place.
You will oversee the preparation and presentation of budgets, management accounts and annual financial statements, ensuring the Board has clear and accurate financial information to support informed decision-making. You will also provide oversight of restricted funds, financial reporting requirements and the charity’s relationship with external accountants, auditors or independent examiners.
Alongside your responsibilities as Treasurer, you will contribute fully as a Trustee, helping to shape Concrete Garden’s strategic direction, support effective governance, manage risk and contribute to the charity’s future development and sustainability.
What You’ll Bring
The Concrete Garden are looking for someone with strong financial knowledge and experience, ideally including a professional accountancy qualification or equivalent financial expertise. Experience of working with a charity, voluntary or community organisation would be advantageous, as would previous experience as a Treasurer, Trustee, governor or volunteer with financial responsibilities.
You will have a good understanding of financial management, policies and controls and be able to think strategically and analytically about financial risk and opportunity. You should be confident communicating financial information clearly to non-financial audiences, with the ability to scrutinise accounts, ask appropriate questions and provide constructive challenge.
Most importantly, you will share Concrete Garden’s vision, mission and values, be committed to good governance and the Nolan Principles, and have the time, enthusiasm and willingness to contribute actively as a member of the Board.
Time Commitment:
To fulfil the additional responsibilities, the Treasurer is expected to allocate time in advance of Board meetings to meet with the Senior Management team and/or relevant senior staff. This will provide an opportunity to review financial papers, discuss key financial issues and ensure that the Treasurer is sufficiently prepared to present and discuss financial information with the Board.
The Board currently meets 6 times per year, including the Annual General Meeting. Regular attendance at Board meetings is expected. Meetings may be held in person and/or online.
