Since its establishment in 1996, Ceòlas Uibhist has grown from a week-long music and dance school to become one of Scotland’s leading Gaelic culture, heritage and arts organisations.

As the number of Gaelic speakers in Scotland has fallen to just 11,000 people the protection, promotion and preservation of Gaelic language, music, dance and heritage have become so important. Based on South Uist, one of Scotland’s last remaining Gaelic language strongholds, Ceòlas is a key driver in the social and cultural resurgence on the islands and is wholly committed to promoting a vibrant Gaelic culture for future generations.

Ceòlas provides a unique opportunity to experience the living tradition within a vibrant Gaelic landscape. They seek to celebrate, promote and nurture traditional music, language, culture and heritage, collaborating with local, national and international communities who have shared interests. In their vision for the future, Ceòlas has partnered with Lews Castle College University of the Highlands and Islands (LCC/UHI) on an ambitious project to develop a new focal point and centre for Gaelic music, dance and culture on South Uist.

Cnoc Soilleir is an exciting joint venture between Ceòlas and LCC/UHI that will promote and celebrate the community’s Gaelic cultural heritage. Establishing this new focal building in Dalabrog, that will contain a state-of-the-art auditorium and recording facilities as well as dedicated teaching rooms, and an accessible archive and library for joint resources will provide facilities to meet the needs of both LCC/UHI’s educational programmes, and Ceòlas’ community-led activities around Gaelic language learning, heritage, culture, music and dance.

The Chief Executive will be responsible for successfully moving Ceòlas into Cnoc Soilleir, lead on a new phase of business development, develop and grow the staff team and create new opportunities in partnership with UHI. They will also develop programmes for Ceòlas to further support, celebrate, promote and nurture traditional Gaelic music, dance, language, culture and heritage. As Chief Executive, they will be public-facing and collaborate with local, national and international communities who have shared interests. Responsibility for the economic viability and financial welfare and sustainability of the charity lies with the Chief Executive.

Ceòlas require the Chief Executive to be a Gaelic speaker who has demonstrable ability in the language and a passion for Gaelic culture and heritage as well as the broader arts and culture sector. Alongside this, to be considered for the role you must have extensive experience managing business activities including excellent financial and budget management skills. Your experience will also extend to fundraising and we expect you to demonstrate knowledge of fundraising streams and how to create a multi-stream income pipeline. Strong project management skills are required and you must show previous experience of co-devising and leading large scale, multi-partner projects. The Chief Executive will be a strong communicator with excellent relationship building and advocacy skills. You must be a highly effective stakeholder manager who is confident working with individuals at all levels. As the senior leader of the organisation, you will manage and lead the team at Ceòlas and must show proven experience in team and individual management.
