Start Up Stirling was set up in 1994 and on its 25th anniversary last year was named the Provost’s Charity of the Year in recognition of the invaluable service it has provided to the city and to Stirlingshire. The organisation is established as a Christian, interdenominational body with the key objective of the prevention of poverty and the relief of suffering and distress by providing household goods, befriending support and crisis food for those who have need of such facilities by virtue of their youth, age, ethnicity, infirmity, disability, special needs, poverty, homelessness, domestic abuse, unemployment or social and economic circumstances. It started off with the key task of assisting local homeless people by providing packs of basic household items, cleaning items and non-perishable food as they started off a tenancy and was originally founded by a group of local churches where volunteers collected items and provided them to homeless people. Since then services have grown in line with the increasing need. There are 3 key services:
• Start Up Foodbanks
• Start Up Helper Packs
• Start Up Support
Ongoing rising costs, particularly of food and domestic fuel, have an acute effect on low-income households. People in rural areas typically need to spend between 10% and 20% more on everyday requirements than those in urban areas. The more remote the area, the greater are these additional costs.
This accounts for 11,000 people across the area, of which:
• Almost one-fifth of whom live outside the south-east urban area (Stirling city).
• 2,500 currently live in areas described as very income deprived nationally.
• Raploch (Stirling) is an area of deep-rooted deprivation and has been consistently among the 5% most deprived areas in Scotland since SIMD 2004.
• Over 200 households are homeless or in temporary accommodation at any one time in Stirlingshire.
• 9,500 people suffer income deprivation who live in areas not currently recognised as income deprived.
The full impact of Covid 19 is yet to be felt but the charity knows that the demand for its services will be more pressing than ever moving forward. The Board of Trustees is preparing itself for the challenges ahead. A decision has been made to appoint a new General Manager to lead the staff team of 6. The Board has also recently recruited some new Trustees and currently has 8. The key task now is to find a Trustee with strong financial or accountancy acumen to act as Treasurer. This role will be key to supporting the staff team to ensure strong financial management and to advise the Board on finance matters. The Treasurer would produce a report for Board meetings which are currently monthly. Currently, the Interim Treasurer is also supporting bank reconciliation and the processing of invoicing but it is expected this function will be handed to the incoming General Manager.
