Description

Right now, 1 in 10 children are missing out on childhood due to a serious illness or disability – and that number is growing.

For these children, quality of life is adversely affected by isolation and their inability to participate in many of the everyday activities enjoyed by their friends and peers. This often results in a growing lack of self-esteem and confidence which can become a barrier to future growth and development.

That’s where Over The Wall Children’s Charity comes in.

Over The Wall is a UK based charity for children with serious illness and disabilities, and their families, to discover a world of mischief and magic. A place where they can be brave and have fun with others. These amazing places are physical – in residential camps and also available online – with Camp in the Cloud. And what’s more, it’s all free!

In Scotland, we have two residential camps for young people affected by health challenges - one for young people and their families, and one for young people to come on their own or with their sibling.

We are looking for volunteers to help run these amazing camps at Strathallen School, Perth, Perthshire, PH2 9EG, on the 5-7th July (Family Camp), 8-12th July (HC and Sibs)

When you volunteer at Over The Wall, you will be invaluable in providing kids & young people with illness and disability with an exciting and fun packed week of activities outside of the hospital setting. You'll help make kids be like kids again and have lasting memories and friends. You will also develop your skills in leadership, communication, management, activities, and events. Our residential camps are jam packed with incredibly fun activities, we provide references, full accommodation, transport to and from camp, t-shirts, and 3 full meals a day! There is plenty of onsite parking, and free shuttle services from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

We offer full training to help you be as prepared as possible for camps. this includes anything from safeguarding and emergencies, to activity preparation and camp facilitation. We ask volunteers to arrive the day before the start of camp for training and orientation.

Residential Volunteer Roles

Camp Teammate

Teammates help create a fun, safe and supportive environment for children with health challenges and their siblings to try new things, have amazing impactful experiences, build confidence and time for reflection on all their achievements. Our brilliant volunteers support campers in a wide range of activities, including archery, climbing, arts and crafts, discovery, sports and games and helping them to reflect on what they have achieved in evening Cabin Chats. You will be part of a team of other incredible volunteers and will need a sense of fun with an energetic, enthusiastic and positive approach.

Activity Leader

Do you have an interest in an activity area? E.g. Arts and Crafts, drama or sports? Join our activity team to run some fantastic sessions that have been planned by our activity team and will be taught to you so that you can confidently run them and help bring some fun and excitement to the sessions.

Media Crew

Your mission should you choose to accept it, is to capture all the magic moments of camp! If you have some photographic or videography experience and have a flair for capturing special moments, then this could be the role for you at camp. We will provide you with the equipment and time to capture and collate the spectacular moments at camp. You will put these together to create a slide show which is shown at the end of camp to everyone to look back on all the transformative experiences they had at camp.

Clinical Volunteer

Participate in daily camper life to provide nursing/medical care. Facilitate a medically sound and safe camp experience for children with chronic and sometimes life-threatening illnesses by contributing to a 24/7 provision of residential medical care. Clinical volunteers will work under the supervision of the Director of Nursing and Nursing Coordinators.
