The office of the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland has a mission. To be ‘fierce’ champions for the human rights of all children and young people in Scotland. They are determined to live their values and live up to the calls from children and young people to be brave, respectful, leaders, independent and committed to their participation in everything they do.
The office bases its work on the human rights of children and young people as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international treaties. They are ultimately accountable to the children and young people of Scotland and pride themselves on ensuring children and young people are involved in all of their work in a real and meaningful way, providing opportunities to participate in decision making at the highest level.
The Commissioner is seeking to fill the role of Head of Strategy which is a critical position within the office. You will lead the team which provides human rights based advice on law, policy and practice. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the promotion and safeguarding of human rights for children in Scotland now and in the future. This is a high-profile position which works closely and directly with the Commissioner, deputising for him when required. You will manage important stakeholder relationships at the highest levels both domestically and internationally. While a significant part of this work has an external focus, you will be part of the Senior Management Team which has cross organisational responsibility for running the organisation. You will work closely with the Commissioner but you will be expected to be self-sufficient and comfortable with the autonomy and delegated authority that is afforded you.
If you are driven by the same passion for this work as the rest of the staff and will enjoy engaging with children and young people directly through your work, have strong senior leadership experience, are knowledgeable about human rights and have the gravitas, credibility, personality and drive to take on this unique role, then please contact us for the candidate pack.
